5 Things You Can Do For Your Skin That Isn’t Applying Products

We all know that proper skincare and maintenance comes from using products. And not just any products, the right ones for our unique skin. When choosing your skincare, you take in to account whether your skin is dry, oily, combo and what concerns you have. These concerns can look like acne, rosacea, fine lines, redness and hyperpigmentation. So yes, naturally you go to the drugstore or beauty department and start scanning the aisles for the products that have the best claims and seem to fix all your skincare woes. BUT, did you know that it’s not just products that lead to good skin? Let’s discuss...

I hope at this point that you have heard that drinking water is the key to good skin. While yes, it is going to help - it won‘t clear your skin on it’s own. It is though, a necessary additional thing you need to do not just for your skin, but your whole body. Water makes up such a high percentage of our bodies that it’s just something you need to do to survive. Drinking water in a high amount (I’m talking at least 2 litres a day) will flush out toxins in your body through increasing your waste, will keep your mouth from being dry and stinky, will help you feel less hungry and works against brain fog. You need to wake up and immediately drink water (yes before coffee) and throughout the day steadily drink those two litres. Your skin and your body will thank you - your pain will decrease, you’ll feel more energized and yes, your skin will be more hydrated.

1. Hydration is the absolute key to healthy skin in my opinion! I’m no expert, but through my experience with skincare and various treatments, hydration has always proven to hold the best results - topically and especially internally.

My next tip is one you need to take with a grain of salt. Okay, vitamins. If your body is lacking in vitamins, it can show up on your skin. TMI here, but if I don’t get enough fibre or vitamin A in my diet, I’m not regular and I’m not glowing. Once I incorporated a fibre supplement and a vitamin gummy with vitamin A, I could feel my body working better and my glow came back. Plus less breakouts! So in order to do this step, please go see your doctor or a naturopath, get some tests done and see if your body is lacking in any vitamins that is hindering your best glow!

2. Talk with your doctor about some vitamins for your best skin. Zinc, vitamin A and B vitamins are a great start for your skin.

Speaking of doctors - go talk to one! Or a dermatologist! They exist for a reason, to help. Yes they will recommend products and can give you a prescription like I am on, but they can identify the root cause and the problems as to why you don‘t have your best skin. Maybe you‘re a female with excess testosterone wreaking havoc on your skin, or you have eczema you didn’t realize or maybe your skin damage is at the point where you need a professional treatment. So please, go have a chat with a dermatologist in your area you can trust.

3. Dermatologists can be your best friend.

This next one may shock you, are you ready? Don‘t listen to your favourite influencer. I get that I am one and I’m asking you to listen to me, but really, I only know what is good for my own skin at the end of the day. Just like all the other beautiful faces that share their experiences and opinions. Just because Kate with the crystal clear skin said that BHA was the only thing that cleared her skin, doesn’t mean BHA is going to save you. I spent years and years listening to other people and getting others advice instead of just doing my own thing. What I wish I would have done sooner is just listen to my skin. People rave about niacinamide, yet whenever I use it, my skin is flaky the next morning and I know it isn’t for me. My fiancé for another example, needs salicylic acid in his face wash or he breaks out and I have intense redness when I use one. Plus, influencers, just like me, feel obligated to say nice things about products (yes genuinely) to encourage positivity and more followers or views. We try products like crazy to create content. But you really don’t have to. I mean, if you’re a skincare product addict, go for it, but don‘t try everything on the market just because I am.

4. Stop listening to influencers and instead listen to your skin and exactly what it is asking for.

Alright, still with me? I hope so! Last one. Stress less. Yep, that god awful S word we all tend to get. Work stress, relationship stress, money stress, time stress, family stress, too much coffee stress....... it’s hurting your skin my dear. Your body is pumping out cortisol when you are stressed and don’t get a break. Your sleep is effected, where your skin is doing its magic to repair and heal and renew and you can feel depressed and anxious which will make you (in my case anyway) stop giving a shit about taking care of yourself. You will also have digestive issues which I know for me makes me break out and can hurt your heart. So how can you have lovely skin with so much stress? I’m not here to tell you to not stress or give you a magic way to reduce it. You’ll have to find that within you. But, here are some ways I reduce my stress:

  1. Wake up early and go to bed 9 hours before. Regulating my sleep has caused my stress to go down.

  2. Eat good foods - I feel so stressed and my heart rate goes up when I have a McDonald‘s night.

  3. Stretch. Oh my gosh stretching just releases so much stress and tension it‘s crazy. I stretch my whole body for a few minutes twice a day.

  4. Limit phone time - especially social media.

  5. This is a big one - make sure your career isn’t draining your soul and brings you prosperity and joy

5. Reduce your stress. This will bring out the most beautiful you and your skin will glow.

Love you all,

Erin xo
